“Flying Dahlia” is a commissioned oil painting.

It was inspired by a smaller painting called “Dahlia (from my garden)”, which was found in my 2012 wall calendar. My client LOVED that painting so much, but needed a larger size to fill her wall. We looked at several other dahlia photos for her large painting, but she was truly in love with the flower she saw in my calendar, so I decided to oblige and paint her a larger version of the same flower.

I would like to think that two years later, I am two years better with my technical skills as an artist. I think that the new, big version looks even better than this first small painting.

My favorite “improvement” in the updated version is the center of the flower. When you see it in person, it’s as if you could get lost inside the flower. It is also more accurate to real life. I studied several photos of dahlia buds as they opened up to make sure I was representing this amazing flower correctly.
