Does this new rug match? (please cast your vote)

I found this rug at TJMaxx this week. I think it matches, but wanted to make sure. It's pretty wild, but I think it balances out the busy print on the window treatments. I like that it's not pink--most floral rugs I've seen have lots of pink in them.

I like how the rug has the same color green as my kitchen walls. Does it matter that it doesn't have any orange or red in it though? I like putting orange pillows on my couch in the fall.

I wish these photos were better... the sunlight in the room is casting a lot of shadows that make it hard to see the true colors. (Not that I mind the sun shining!!)

I have been looking for a rug for our family room since the summer of 2008. I HAD found one I liked, but didn’t want to pay more than a couple hundred dollars since that’s realistically all I could afford (the one I liked was $1,200!) So I kept watching the sales at PotteryBarn Teen and PBKids (where I get lots of my decor since their colors are much more fun than regular Pottery Barn.) The cheapest rug they had was about $300, and I never found one that was quite right. They all looked too girly–which is understandable since they were designed for little girls/teen girls bedrooms.

On Monday I went to TJMaxx to look for new fun dishes, but found a rug when I wasn’t even looking. It cost MUCH LESS than I had even wanted to spend, so that was an added bonus. I think it matches, but am not sure… If you have any strong feelings one way or the other I’d love to hear about it.

I’m leaning towards keeping it, as it’s definitely growing on me. Plus, the price is definitely right. I love TJMaxx!

If I keep the rug, the only thing left to “finish off” this room will be to save up for having the paisley recliner recovered. It really does not match, but I just have to live with it the way it is until I sell some more paintings! 🙂

Thanks for voting!

  1. My very first thought after seeing the first picture was, “Gee, it’s too bad that the middle of the flowers aren’t red/orange.” Still, I love the pattern and the rest of the colors are totally perfect, so my vote is to keep it. Marshall’s/TJ Maxx is my all-time favorite place to look for cute/quality/inexpensive rugs, too! (PS–maybe you could get really crafty and figure out a way to change the color of some of the flower centers… Then it would be PERFECT!)

    • I actually did wonder too if I could do something to add red. I couldn’t think of anything though (except maybe a grape juice stain!) The more I look at it in the room, the more I like it.

  2. I love it! I think it’s perfect! It matches both walls so well, and the orange can just be the “pop” color. (Can you tell I watch way too much HGTV?) Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home—I get so inspired! You are truly amazing!

    • Your home is beautiful too! I think your HGTV moments have been well-spent. 🙂 Thanks for your kind words… you are very sweet! Now that I think about it, I was actually inspired to do this blog showing some photos of our home because of you! When Erin told me that you wanted to see what my fireplace mantel looked like during different seasons, I thought maybe other people would find that interesting too.
Thanks for the feedback on the rug…

    • So far three votes to KEEP the rug! But since you’re an interior designer maybe your vote should count for even more?? 🙂 I think I will keep it… I’m so glad you like it! Good old TJMaxx… when you least expect to find something, it will appear there like magic.

  3. I love it. I love your house. Did you build it?

I think the rug looks awesome.

I love reading your blog too.

    • Thank you!! Yes, we did build the house. We needed enough room for both my studio and Tim’s office and a guest area, so a newer home seemed like the way to go. We still LOVE old homes, but (now that we are getting OLD) this isn’t the season of our life to be fixing up another house. Especially with all the changes that come from moving across the country.

I guess it’s unanimous that I should keep the rug. 🙂 I loved reading your Christmas letter this year (as always!) Your new dog is super cute.
